Day 82: Queen Victoria Market, Melbourne

Pretty quiet day today.   Met up with some co-workers for lunch -- and then walked over to the Queen Victoria Market.

The "Queen Vic" is the largest open air market in the Southern Hemisphere (17 acres) and it is the only surviving 19th century market in the Melbourne CBD (until the 1960s there were 3 major markets in the area).  The market started in the 1850s -- expanding when space was made available by the closure of the old Melbourne Cemetery -- there are still about 9,000 people buried under the market (so lots of ghost stories).

I walked through the section of the market that sells fruits / vegetables & gourmet / deli foods -- very nice selection.  There's also a large part of the market that sells clothes, etc.  I'll probably go back on Sunday for the monthly craft market.

Most of the stalls only accept cash -- so I was limited as to how much I could buy (my debit card was cancelled by BoA while I've been in Australia (because of possible fraudulent activity that occurred in Chicago before I left) -- so I have a dwindling supply of Aussie $$).

Weather forecast looks pretty crappy for the weekend -- good thing there are a couple more big museums to check out.

Weather:  rainy & chilly most of the day, clearing a bit in the late afternoon, 46 - 59F
Miles Walked:  4.5

Pic Notes:

  • 1 - 2:  Delicious macarons from La Belle Miette
    • I still think that the luxemburgerli that I used to get at Sprüngli in Zurich are the best macarons
  • 3:  Hardware Lane - odd name, lots of nice restaurants
  • 4 - 16:  Queen Victoria Market
    • 4:  1st coffee at the market (pretty good)
    • 9:  that's a lot of eggs (and boy, are they expensive in Australia)
    • 12:  2nd coffee at the market (excellent)
  • 17:  a giant stone coin purse
  • 18 - 19:  Fitzroy
