Weird weather today -- sunny one moment, raining the next -- fortunately it would only rain for 3 - 5 minutes at a time.
I went to 3 craft markets today -- all were small and none of them were very good. The first one was in Newport (18 minute train ride from downtown) -- the best part of the market was the building itself (it's called The Substation) -- this was actually the best of the 3 markets -- and there was also a small farmers market in the parking lot (actually the real reason I ventured out there was to buy some crumpets -- I bought them at the convent farmers market -- very delicious). The next market was at Queen Vic -- this one was the worst of the 3 -- less than 10 tables -- and only 2 of the tables were interesting. But -- there was an Indonesian Festival going on at the market -- so had a fantastic lunch of chicken satay and noodles. After that, I decided to walk back to my apartment (only 2 miles) --- and on the way, stopped in at a small craft market in Fitzroy -- mostly strange stuff -- some nice artwork & jewelry though.
Can't believe this is my last week of sabbatical!
Weather: mostly cloudy, period of rain and sunshine, windy, 46 - 57F
Miles Walked: 6.1
Book/s Read: Payment in Blood (Inspector Lynley, Book 2) by Elizabeth George. I decided to continue to read the series -- there are 18 books -- I know I've read some of them -- but not the early ones (Book 1 was published in 1988). Her writing style has changed a bit over the years -- she used to use a lot of obscure words (I think I used the kindle dictionary feature more while reading this one book than I've used for all previous books combined).
Pic Notes:

Pic Notes:
- 1 -2: Crumpets! The Substation Farmers Market in Newport
- 3 - 6: The Substation
- 7: interesting wall at the Newport train station
- 8 - 13: Queen Vic Market
- 8: Long line at the American Doughnut Kitchen. They have been selling doughnuts (donuts?) at the market since 1950 (none of the owners are American -- they named it that to reflect the popularity of Americans in Melbourne in 1950).
- 14: City Baths (1903). Melbourne City Council opened up the first City Baths in 1860 -- the objective was to stop people form bathing in the Yarra River, which by the 1850s had become quite pollute and the cause of an epidemic of typhoid fever. You can't take a bath anymore in this building -- but you can go for a swim.
- 15: Labor Day protest at Victorian Trades Hall (annual event). The article indicated that there were 5,000 people protesting in Melbourne -- I only saw a handful.
- Trades Hall (1859) is home to many of the Victorian trade unions and left-wing political parties.
- 17 - 20: Royal Exhibition Building / Carlton Gardens (same place I was yesterday)
- 20: amusing to watch the native-hen go after the seagull for some bread (the native-hen can't fly -- but it can run fast)
- 21: Rose Street Market
- 23 - 24: Industry Beans -- my favorite coffee hangout
