The Kookaburra song is an Australian folk song written by Marion Sinclair in 1932 for a contest being held by the Victorian Girl Guides. We used to sing this song in Girl Scouts ... in rounds ... just like this corny video ...
(note: gum tree = eucalyptus tree)
In 2009, Larrikin Music sued the band 'Men at Work' for copy right infringement, alleging that part of the flute riff of the band's 1981 single 'Down Under' was copied from Kookaburra. Larrikin Music won the lawsuit.
Kookaburra sits on the old gum tree,
Merry merry king of the bush is he.
Laugh, Kookaburra, laugh, Kookaburra,
Gay your life must be!
Merry merry king of the bush is he.
Laugh, Kookaburra, laugh, Kookaburra,
Gay your life must be!
Kookaburra sits in the old gum tree
Eating all the gumdrops he can see
Stop, Kookaburra, Stop, Kookaburra
Leave some there for me.
Eating all the gumdrops he can see
Stop, Kookaburra, Stop, Kookaburra
Leave some there for me.
Kookaburra sits in the old gum tree,
Counting all the monkeys he can see
Stop, Kookaburra, Stop, Kookaburra,
That's no monkey, that's me.
Counting all the monkeys he can see
Stop, Kookaburra, Stop, Kookaburra,
That's no monkey, that's me.
