Day 89: Melbourne & Sydney

Starting my journey back to the States.  First stop --- Sydney.

I had a great flight on Virgin Australia (although it killed me to have to pay to check a 2nd bag --- $35 if you do it online; $70 if you do it at the airport!).   I'm staying at the Park Hyatt in The Rocks near Circular Quay -- rated as one of the best hotels in Sydney --- I'm glad that I had enough Hyatt points for a 1 night stay.  Very nice hotel -- great views of the quay and the harbor -- and amazingly good service.

I didn't do much in Sydney.  Walked around for a bit.  Met up with a co-worker/friend for a drink.  And not much else --- just relaxed at the hotel and enjoyed the views.  (I'm in denial -- can't believe my sabbatical is over!)

Weather:  Mostly Cloudy, 48 - 73F
Miles Walked:  5.0

Book/s Read:  The Painter by Peter Heller. Not as good as The Dog Stars. Kinda dark / strange - beautiful writing though.

Pic Notes:
  • 1:  view of Circular Quay from my hotel room
  • 2:  Sydney Opera (view when I lean off my balcony)
  • 3:  The Rocks Foodie Market
  • 4:  a Piccolo Latte -- my favorite coffee drink -- it's espresso with very little milk / foam
  • 5:  an Australia White Ibis pulling garbage out of a can -- much to the seagulls' delight (you can see why many view the Ibis as a pest)
  • 6:  Park Hyatt (my room is to the left -- top floor)
  • 7:  view at night from my hotel room
  • 8:  fancy toilet in my hotel room -- heated seats -- and a control panel (which I haven't figured out)
  • 9:  has nothing to do with my trip -- just thought it was funny -- click here to read the article
    • best line in the article:  "Blinkah" is how Bostonians pronounce "blinker", otherwise known as a turn signal.
