I had a fantastic day -- woke up early so I could check out the wildlife. Lots of kangaroos hopping around in the big paddock behind mine (kangaroos really don't have any boundaries / fences mean nothing to them). And lots of birds.
After that I went out exploring the southern part of Kangaroo Island (see pic notes).
Note: the bad thing about the abundant wildlife on KI -- is that you need to be very careful driving especially at night (and dusk / dawn). Lots of roadkill on the major roads -- rather gross.
Weather: huge storm overnight, clearing in the morning, mostly sunny the rest of the day, 52 - 73F
Miles Walked: 7.5
kms Driven: 227

Pic Notes:
- 1 - 6: morning at the cottage
- 1 - 2, 4: Western Grey Kangaroos -- subspecies unique to Kangaroo Island
- 6: Superb Fairywren
- 7 - 16: Vivonne Bay - Point Ellen
- 2 people drowned in 2011 at Point Ellen. They were standing on the rocks when a rogue wave knocked them over and pulled them out to sea. Lots of signs up now warning of the danger.
- 10, 12: the beach (in the distance) was voted as one of the best in Australia
- 15: Black Tiger Snake - dangerous / venomous snake. The good thing is that Australian snakes have really teeny fangs --- they can't penetrate cloth, etc. --- the bad thing is that I was wearing sandals when I encountered this snake. I was walking on the path taking picture -- not really looking at where I was walking (it was chilly out -- so I foolishly though that snakes wouldn't be out). I saw the snake right before I stepped on it. Fortunately it just kept slithering along as I jumped back and then stood still (interestingly enough -- snakes in Australia cannot detect body heat -- so if you stand still -- they won't know you are there --- not true for snakes elsewhere in the world.) Fortunately the snake just slithered into the brush -- and I ran back to my car and put shoes on.
- 17: Cape Barren Goose
- 18 - 26: Koalas - cute but stupid -- their brain is only the size of a walnut; they sleep 20 hours a day; eat eucalyptus leaves the other 4 hours.
- 27 - 54: Flinders Chase National Park (beautiful park! I needed at least 1 more day to do it justice)
- 28 - 35: Remarkable Rocks
- 40: Weir Cove
- 41 - 54: Cape du Couedic
- 48 - 49: Admirals Arch
- 55 - 61: Cape Borda (south west tip of the island -- horrible 37 km road to get there -- thought my car was going to fall apart)
- 62: my cottage
- 63: New Holland Honeyeater
- note: an eagle flew by while I was sitting outside -- the yard cleared in 1 second -- birds and wallabies just disappeared
