Can't believe it's Day 80! Just 10 days left --- how is that possible?!?!?!
I spent a good part of the day at the Melbourne Royal Botanic Gardens -- really beautiful gardens (even in "winter") -- and easy to see most everything in an afternoon. There were some bits that were closed down for maintenance --- but nothing that made much of a difference to me. I especially liked the herb garden -- incredibly fragrant.
Weather: partly cloudy in the morning, sunny in the afternoon, 41 - 63F
Miles Walked: 8.6
Book/s Read: A Great Deliverance by Elizabeth George. This is the first book in the Inspector Lynley / Havers series (there are 18 altogether). I know that I've read a lot of this series -- but don't know if I've read them all. I don't remember reading this one (or any of the early ones). Good read -- makes me dislike #18 (which I read while on sabbatical).
Pic Notes (warning -- there are a lot of pictures -- mostly of trees & flowers)

- 1: Australian-Hellenic Memorial to Australian and Greek killed in the Battles of Greece and Crete in 1941.
- 2: Shrine of Remembrance - WWI memorial (unveiled in 1934) -- it's the site of annual observances of ANZAC Day and Remembrance Day and is one of the largest war memorials in Australia.
- 3: Kids running around in the gardens with animal masks
- 7, 54-56: Herb garden
- 21: There are little pavilions / rest areas like this all around the gardens -- nice touch
- 23: I had lunch at the one cafe open in the gardens -- surprisingly good soup (chickpeas, lentils, garlic, leeks). I sat near these old ladies out & about with their dogs. They used to all live near one another -- now they meet up a couple of times a year -- all the dogs are rescue dogs. Very nice Melburnians.
- 25: Australian Coot
- 31, 34: Nankeen Night Heron (there were a bunch of them in 2 trees)
- 51: Guilfoyle's Volcano - built in 1876 as a water reservoir for the gardens
- 58: No idea
- 60: Gardens House
- 64: Went looking for the big pine cones on the Bunya Bunya tree -- none to be found -- googled it tonight -- they are ENORMOUS (I've included a pic of one off of the net) -- I wasn't looking for something that looked like that! --- so now I want to go back and look at that tree again
- 71: Trains going under Federation Square
- 72: Video - Federation Bells: 39 upturned bells in Birrarung Marr park -- rather cool
