Day 12: Paihia

Bit of a kerfluffle picking up my campervan today.  The first one that they showed me had an infestation of ants (running from the engine, along the passenger door well, and then pack to the sliding door well).  I told them that I wouldn't accept that van -- they told me nothing else was available (for some reason because I'm doing a drop-off in a different city -- limits the vans that they'll let me have).  I asked to speak to a manager -- took awhile -- first I was told that there wasn't one there on premise -- and then the branch manager showed up.  So in the end they gave me another vehicle --- supposedly a slight upgrade -- but I can't tell the difference.  Set me back though by a couple of hours -- so didn't get to Paihia until almost 5pm.

A couple of photos attached (of the camper) -- it was a beautiful drive up here --- and for the most part, not too bad driving the camper and driving on the left side of the road (although I have to really think when taking right turns --- there are a lot of rotaries -- which is cool -- I actually find them much easier to do).  The camper is a bit bigger than I would like --- but that only becomes a problem when i go to park (it's 7.2m long and 3m high).

The sleeping area looks quite comfortable --- and there is a duvet & sheets & pillows.  The toilet, sink, and shower are all together in one little room -- will do the trick when I'm at a campsite that doesn't have facilities.  And there is a 2 burner stove (and a grill outside), a sink in the kitchen area, a fridge that runs all the time (there are solar panels on the roof of the van to help out when not at a powered camp site).  And an electric kettle -- and a toaster (and for some reason, a lot of utensils).  And a space heater, and 2 outlets, and a microwave!  And all kinds of lighting.  I have to be attached to power for the microwave, outlets or lights to work.

I'm on a limited bandwidth internet -- so can't attach that much.

Weather:  cloudy, sunny, cloudy, rainy; 70 - 75F

  1. Looks very spacious--I assume you can stand up in it?
