Day 13: Paihia / Bay of Islands

Spent all of the day in Paihia and took a 4-hour boat trip around the Bay of Islands.  Absolutely stunning.

Captain Cook was the first European to visit the area (in 1769) --- and the first European settlement  in New Zealand was in this area.

Very popular for big game fishing area (saw some people coming back from early morning trip and they all had caught a big fish or two).  Zane Grey put his area on the map in the 1930s when he spent time here and wrote a book about the fishing, etc.

There are also a lot of dolphins in the bay.  Some days you'll see 50+ of them -- we only saw 5.

(and the one picture that looks like a choppy sea -- look closely -- it's really a school of fish churning the water)

Spent a 2nd night at the same campground -- quite a good place.  People are very social at campgrounds (well at least this one).  Mix of people in big campers, small campers, and cars.  (for something like $15 a night you can rent a room with some beds in it - nothing else -- shared / common bathroom, shower, kitchen).

Getting a bit more used to living in the camper -- didn't drive that much today though.  Did go grocery shopping -- so will have my first breakfast in the camper tomorrow (fruit, toast & coffee - very exciting).  Quite comfortable sleeping in the camper - it gets cool at night, so not too hot inside (there is only 1 window in the back that opens up and a thing in the roof that pops up).  There is a lot of storage area in the camper -- beneath the seats and overhead bins -- it worked out well that I used packing cubes for this trip -- just popped them up in the overhead bins.  There is also a safe onboard -- sadly not big enough to hold a laptop -- but good for passport, etc.

I never really gave this one much thought when I was in Brazil -- but in the Southern Hemisphere, it's the Northern Exposure that gets all the light (so opposite of the Northern Hemisphere).  So I guess the moss grows on the southern side of trees?

Loads of Laundry:  2  ($8 a load!  But still a billion times cheaper than a hotel)
Book/s Read:  1 (Deep Winter by Samuel W. Gailey - fast-paced, decent read)
Miles Walked:  4
km Driven:  17.7
