Day 28: Queenstown & Glenorchy

Wi-fi at motels continues to amaze me (at just how bad it is!).  It's the rare place that provides unlimited wi-fi (even if you pay for it) -- usually there are time restrictions or bandwidth restrictions --- or both.  In Queenstown -- it was 1 hour free -- which would have been ok if it had been fast -- but was incredibly slow.  So posted pictures -- and poof -- that was it.  Oh well ...

Had a gorgeous day in Queenstown / Glenorchy.  Left Te Anau around 8am (after stopping at what became my favorite cafe) and got into Queenstown around 10am.  It was rather cloudy when I left Te Anau --- but the skies cleared dramatically as I approached Queenstown -- and it turned into an absolutely beautiful day.

Queenstown is a ski town in the winter (June - September) -- and it's the place for adrenaline junkies the rest of the year.  While I think it's beautifully situated on Lake Wakatipu -- the town itself didn't do much for me.  There are some interesting shops -- and some very good restaurants -- but too many people -- and lots of backpackers (I'm getting so old!).  It was fun in the evening though -- lots of people hanging out having a good time.

So I stopped in Queenstown -- walked around for awhile and then decided to drive to Glenorchy (thanks to Melissa for mentioning her visit there).

Glenorchy is just beautiful -- it's situated at the end of Lake Wakatipu -- and lies near the borders of Mount Aspiring National Park and Fiordland National Park.  There's a handful of stores in town -- and a couple of motels.   I had lunch at a really nice cafe there (pic below).  The area has been in a lot of films (including Lord of the Rings).

After lunch I went for a marked walk along the Glenorchy Lagoon -- great walk --- stunning scenery & benches strategically placed to sit and enjoy it all.  After that I took a walk around the lake for a bit -- and then headed back to Queenstown to check into my motel.  Walked into town and hung out for a bit -- met some "interesting" people -- and then called it a night.

Weather:  low clouds, sunny with big puffy clouds, 45 - 70F
Miles Walked:  8
km Driven:  268.6

pic notes (seem to be all out of order):  1 - favorite cafe in Te Anau, 2 - sunrise on the mountains in Te Anau, 3 - southern end of Lake Wakatipu, 4 - view from my motel in Queenstown, 5/6 - Queenstown in the evening, 7 - not really sure what is going on -- on the other side of the lake from my motel, 8 - cute house on the road to Queenstown (stopped across the street to get more coffee), 9/10/11 - southern end of Lake Wakatipu, 12/13/14/15 - Queenstown, all the rest are of Glenorchy
