Picked-up a rental car today and drove west up the Tasman Bay coast to Sandy Bay (close to Abel Tasman National Park). Fantastic drive --- it's just a gorgeous area -- lots of vineyards, olive trees, orchards, coastline, forests. Scenery changes quickly -- one moment driving along the coast, next moment plunging into a dark cool pine forest (which just smell wonderful). There are walk-bike paths all along the way (today -- I would have liked a bike -- might rent one later in the week).
Weather: mostly sunny, occasionally cloudy, some fog, 63 - 77F
Miles Walked: 6.2
km Driven: 185
Pic Notes:
First (and then later -- the last) stop was
Rabbit Island - gorgeous beach (and fortunately no rabbits). When I stopped in the morning it was high tide -- so very narrow area to walk on the beach. When I returned later in the day it was low tide and a huge swath of beach was exposed -- perfect walking beach.
Little Kaiteriteri: beautiful beach, great shells, cool rocks (lots of granite)
Birds:
white-faced heron,
pukeko,
pied stilt,
red-necked stint, variable oystercatcher,
south island pied oystercatcher,
black-backed gull
