Day 36: Nelson (Happy St. Paddy's Day)

Fortunately the rain finally stopped.  Spent another day just walking around Nelson.  It's a small town -- you can walk the CBD on the diagonal in 15 minutes -- lots of good restaurants though -- and coffee shops -- and parks.  There are little parks all over the place -- really pretty (and lots of benches to sit on -- good for reading & people watching).

And after all that walking -- I had to stop and have a few pints to celebrate St. Patricks's Day

Weather:  mix of sun & clouds, 65 - 77F
Miles Walked:  6

Book/s Read:  Lost Lake by Sarah Addison Allen.  Charming.  Fast read.  Her books are a bit goofy -- and also have some "magic" in them.  (I'll admit it -- I've read all of her books)

Pic Notes:

  • dessert --- berry parfait -- really delicious
  • Nelson cathedral tower
  • first rugby match in NZ was played on this field in 1870
  • bird pic -- no interesting birds today -- this is a blackbird -- the most common bird in NZ (introduced in 1862)
  • Nelson Haven tidal inlet (obviously it's low tide).  and click here to see what it looked like when being prepped for the first european settlers (1841)
  • pic 14:  backpacker's hostel -- you see these all over the place in NZ.
  • Organic Taylor's Gold pear -- possibly the best pear that I've ever had.
    • The pear is a natural mutation of a Doyenne du Comice pear -- it was first discovered by Michael King-Turner in his Riwaka orchard near Nelson, NZ, in 1986.

  1. You found the "fibre"! Did you find the wine across the street? The pear looks beautiful. I love comice pears---and this is even better?

    1. The Fibre shop was great. Bought a couple things there. And the weaving guild from some nearby town was there (bunch of old ladies) -- had a great chat with them. I had beer across the street -- will have to go back and check out the wine. And yes -- even better than comice pears.
